Chapter Sixteen

Nora winced as one of the students tumbled into a drift of snow.

Mrs. McCale cupped her hands over her mouth. “Jordy, be careful. You’re too rough!”

Jordy McAllen waved to Mrs. McCale from a ways up the hill, jerking Felix, to his feet. They were having a calm snowball fight that mostly involved fort building, but Jordy managed to get everyone running about madly, shouting, screaming, and calling out to one another.

Great fun, but there was tumbling, a few bruised knees, and a lot of wet, cold children.

Nora agreed with Mrs. McCale’s calling out to him to settle down, though she wasn’t about to express it to Jordy herself. He seemed to be a wild boy, though he had his moments when Nora realized that there was intelligence and potential in him. Was that what Dr. McCale had seen in him? Nora believed so. Every day she spent at McCale House, she realized that Dr. McCale was insightful.

Ivy was next to Jordy, following him around like a little shadow determined to never leave his side for a moment. He knelt next to her and cupped her hands in his, giving her what appeared to be a serious talk—though what about, Nora couldn’t begin to imagine. She supposed it must be something about the snowballs, for there wasn’t much else that they could be talking about.

When Ivy knelt and began packing snow, Nora’s thoughts were confirmed. They were preparing ammunition.

Heavens. Hopefully no one would get hurt.

“Ivy’s made a great deal of progress, hasn’t she?” Mrs. McCale adjusted her muffler. “My, it’s cold.”

Both of those statements were true. Though, Ivy’s progress was harder to judge. “You think so?”

“Aye, it is cold.”

Nora shuffled her feet like a child, feeling ashamed even as she did it. “No, about Ivy’s progress.”

Mrs. McCale chuckled. “Aye, I knew what you meant. Ivy is making definite progress. I think she’s better off than most of the children here. Her mother’s love made all the difference—it is felt and experienced even in absence.”

Nora agreed with that. Though her grandchildren were not perfect, and neither was her daughter, she still believed that Claire loved the girls as much as a woman could. It was simply a matter of sometimes not being entirely mature, but who was?

“We’re getting closer, too. Or Callum—my husband—says so.” Mrs. McCale sighed. “He usually has a good sense for these things. If we could understand more about her, about how her mind works, we’d be there.”

Nora furrowed her eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

Mrs. McCale took a deep breath. “It might not make much sense, though I’ll try to explain. We’re looking for a way to reach her consistently. The ability for her to work one-on-one with someone, to be met where she’s at and be tutored privately, is one thing. That’s what we’re doing now. However, we need to find out more.”

“Oh.” Nora didn’t understand completely. “Isn’t she just a quiet child? Dr. McCale says we’ll never fix her.”

“Yes, Callum would say that. But what he means is that you’ll never change her into something she’s not.
